3 Things to Do on Veterans Day in Altoona

the buzz veterans day in altoona

Veterans Day is a time to honor all the brave men and women who have served in our nation’s armed forces. It’s a day to show our collective gratitude for their innumerable sacrifices.

Here are some ways you can observe this holiday in Altoona.

1. ATTEND THE VETERANS DAY CELEBRATION AT PRAIRIE MEADOWS

Head to Prairie Meadows on Friday, November 11th for a patriotic Veterans Day celebration!

The ceremony starts at 11 a.m. and will feature the presentation of colors, patriotic musical performances, military displays, and remarks from local and national leaders.

Plus, all attendees will receive a free box lunch!

Central Iowa rock band “The Rag Doll Incident” will be providing free entertainment in the Finish Line Show Lounge after the ceremony.

2. PAY A VISIT TO ALTOONA’S VETERANS MEMORIAL SITES

Altoona has two beautiful places where you can pay tribute to America’s Veterans.

The Korean/Vietnam Memorial was designed, organized, and installed by late Altoona resident and veteran Doug Teuber and countless volunteers. It’s located between Hy-Vee and the Enabling Garden at 1100 1st Ave South.

At the Veterans Memorial A-7D Jet Display, you’ll find a full-size attack aircraft from the Vietnam War era, which was refurbished by local Altoona residents in the late 1990s. You can see it at Sam Wise Youth Complex, on the corner of 8th Ave SE and 8th Street SE.

3. GO SEE THE FREEDOM ROCK AT ADVENTURELAND

Outside of Adventureland Inn sits Iowa’s 100th Freedom Rock, a 38,000-pound boulder that’s been beautifully transformed into a patriotic mural.

The painting includes imagery of the Iowa flag, American flag, and American military service members throughout history.

Iowa artist Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II unveiled the masterpiece earlier this year, marking the 100th and final mural of his Iowa Freedom Rock collection.

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO SERVED

To all the veterans in the Altoona community and beyond—thank you for your service. We’re grateful for all that you’ve done for us. Your sacrifices will never go unnoticed.

Happy Veterans Day!
